Family Club on the Rec

Wimg 6055

Kirsti Lowery moved to the village a number of years ago not knowing anyone. Having a young child she naturally wanted to meet other families. She noticed that in the Villager one day, the question was asked as to how to get the recreation ground used more. She would visit there and never see a soul, so decided to reply to this advert and offer suggestions. She was then in contact with Thea and the two exchanged ideas …..and the family club was born. They advertised in the Villager and on the first gathering had two families join them. It was great, all the children played at the park, whilst the parents got to know each other over tea and cake! They have had teddy bear picnics in the park, lots of playtimes and when the winter months set in they would go to each other’s houses and do arts and crafts and play.

One of the favourites was a visit to Hill Farm to feed the baby lambs this spring! There are now have at least 6 or 7 families attending the monthly gatherings and the support network they have between them is great. They always welcome new members and it’s a joy to see the children of Slapton having fun in the recreation ground again!

Slapton Book Club

Book Club

Established in 2009, we are a large but very friendly group of 20 members who meet on average every 6 weeks.  Our objective is to encourage reading of all genres without feeling pressurised into producing an in-depth analysis on each book.  Reading is a pleasure not a burden.

We take it in turns to host our meetings, creating a convivial and enjoyable evening for all.

As well as reading books, we have also had several outings to the cinema. They have been very enjoyable, especially when it coincides with a novel that we may have been reading at the time.

The Covid-19 restrictions have made Book Club meetings impossible of late. The Book Club will restart when circumstances allow. For further information, please contact Madeline Carman.

Here is a selection of some of the books that have been read over the past 10 years.

Slapton Wheelers & Wheelettes

Wheelers Shirt

Slapton Wheelers and Wheelettes started in 2009 with a few friends going for a bike ride occasionally and over time more people joined the group. In 2010 we participated in the London to Brighton and it all seems to have grown from there. Our base was the Carpenters Arms in Slapton where we met prior to each training session and then often afterwards. We still use the pub sign as our logo which we have on all the shirts.
